review 1: Jules Verne is considered the grandfather of science fiction and his stories do not disappoint. I read Journey to the Center of the Earth when I was a child but the opportunity never presented itself for me to read his other works. When you read his stories, it's difficult to fathom that his works are over a 100 years old. His writing is fast paced, intelligent and still extremely current. When you sometimes read older works, the writing style and technology of the time seems to date the work. Not so with Jules Verne. Five Weeks in a Balloon grips you with adventure and the sense of the unknown that still existed when discovering parts of Africa. From the Earth to the Moon and Round the Moon examines space travel that was revolutionary in it's time. Journey to the Center o... moref Earth and Around the World in Eighty Days keep you wanting to read more. And of course with 20,000 Leagues of the Sea, who doesn't want to travel with Captain Nemo on his Nautilus? Along with the Mysterious Island, who answers that elusive question as to what happened to Captain Nemo while sharing into the hardships and experiences of castaways on an island. His work is timeless and I feel fortunate to finally have read them.
review 2: A great collection of classic science fiction by Jules Verne including Five Weeks in a Balloon, Around the World in Eighty Days, A Journey to the Center of the Earth, From the Earth to the Moon, Round the Moon, Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea andThe Mysterious Island. As usual, the B&N Leatherbound version is well put together, interesting cover art, this is one of the larger (wider) books in the series though. It stands out a little more sitting on the shelf but in a good way. Many of these stories have been converted into movies (and remakes of those movies (and remakes of remakes)) but the original writings are by far the best way to enjoy these adventures. By modern standards some of the stories will come across as dated, cheesy, and maybe even somewhat boring but if you can look past the technology gap and the time gaps, these are incredibly stories. The titles sum up what the story is about very clearly, for example Journey to the Center of the Earth is about a group of explorers who enter a volcano and begin a journey to discover the center of the Earth.Full five stars, a book I continue to read over and over especially on a rainy or hot summer day. At roughly 1200 it is not a quick and easy read but is very much worth the effort to finish each story. less
