review 1: The most interesting thing about this story was that Hasidic Judaism appears to have manifested almost identically to conservative religious sects that are already familiar to me. I wasn't aware, for instance, that Hasidim couples have as many children as possible. (The author did not specify that they abjure birth control, but I think that's the case, similarly to Catholics and more recent Protestant movements.) They are isolated from the surrounding culture, their children are schooled separately, and girls are brought up to be entirely domestic, and not educated. It makes me wonder if my very conservative Homeschool acquaintances are aware that they have most likely created a thin copy of a counter culture that has existed since before the Common Era & that they deal wi... moreth very, *very* similar problems that arise from perpetuating a belief system by closing people / specifically children off from anything that might contradict those beliefs.
review 2: This is a story of a 20 something woman that moves to the city to be a writer. She ends up working for a newspaper and uncovers the story of a woman found in a junk yard. The reporter finds out that the family is an ultra orthodox Jewish family and how in the case of this story they chose to protect their community. This was a mystery that took awhile to get started, but the last half of the book went very quickly. less

I wanted this to be better than it was. The main character was pretty obnoxious and whiney.
