review 1: Julia Donaldson's Paper Dolls is a wonderful book which explores the imagination of a little girl and her string of paper dolls, made with her Mum. The dolls go on an exciting adventure through the house and eventually end up in the garden. You see them escape the clutches of a toy dinosaur, a snarling tiger and the snapping jaws of the oven-glove crocodile. But when a pair of scissors approach the paper dolls existence is at risk!It is a fantastic book which captures beautifully and illustrates childhood, memory and the power of imagination. It is an ideal book for the Early Years Foundation Stage and lends itself perfectly to the most important element of Early Learning which is Play.As well as the very obvious Art and Design benefits, it is an excellent resource for ear... morely writing, developing communication and language. If used in a Key Stage One class it also has to with Geography and Drama. Children can experience the following activities; designing their own paper dolls, writing their own adventure stories, discussing what is meant by imagination and where their dolls might go or who they might encounter, creating a map of the dolls journey, acting out their adventures and developing their knowledge of rhyming words. It is also a fantastic book to use during a PSHE lesson. Children can be encouraged to discuss how they feel when someone does something unkind to them or perhaps breaks something of theirs. They can also discuss different types of memories for example happy and sad memories. This would be perfect for a circle time session. A good activity for Early Years would be to create a set of paper dolls for each child to take home for the weekend. With the help of their parents or siblings, the children can then write about or draw pictures of what they did with their dolls. Once each child has had their turn the class will have collaboratively created their own picture book for the Class to share or alternatively the dolls could be used to create an attractive number line for individuals or the Class. This book is a beautiful story and is perfect for Early Years and Key Stage One!
review 2: My 4 year old daughter was extremely attracted the the book cover - whereas my 9 year old son not so much! However he was sharp over with the mention of 'The Gruffalo' author! A firm favourite in our household. We enjoyed the repetition and rhythm of the names of the dolls and made a little song out of this which my daughter was able to pick up on with ease. My sons destructive side was fed with the destruction of the dolls. Finally, my heart melted as it becomes apparent how we pass down the things we love - whether it's paper dolls - or reading and installing a love of literature. A wonderful read. less
