review 1: It is a rare and talented writer that can tackle the darkest and most serious topics with warmth and humor. Julia MacDonnell proves herself to be solidly in this group with novel, Mimi Malloy, at Last! When readers are first introduced to Mimi she is a cranky, chain smoking, hard drinking woman in her sixties. One of seven sisters of a Depression Era Irish Catholic family of Boston, Mimi is used to being busy and to hard work. Divorced for years and the mother of six strong willed daughters Mimi suddenly finds herself forced into early retirement. Instead of finding comfort in her children, grandchildren, and surviving siblings, Mimi finds them all to be a bit too much and too unbearable. Ironic since they often feel the same way about her. When one of her sisters beg... moreins a family genealogy project to answer her grandchild’s questions about the family tree, Mimi finds herself in an unusual state of agitation. Before long Mimi is being visited by thoughts of her departed sisters, and then gradually the memories that she has repressed for years. Further complicating things an MRI shows a disturbing pattern of atrophy, forcing Mimi to question what she has believed to be true about her past, specifically relating to the fate of a sister that was sent away to Ireland until she learned to behave, and the horrors of a wicked stepmother she vowed to forget. MacDonnell has created a shocking and haunting story, told by an unforgettable character, both of which will live on in readers hearts and minds long after the novel has be read.
review 2: Ahhhh, that was so refreshing. Mimi Malloy At Last by Julia MacDonnell was exactly the summer read I needed. Mimi is in her late sixties and has just found out that she has black spots in her brain that are impairing her memory. Then a genealogy project and a found pendant start helping her remember all the memories she locked away from her childhood. It's a story of sisterhood, motherhood, love and deep family tragedy. It was very sweet and I really like Mimi. It had a few story lines thar didn't feel fleshed out, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. less
