Goodreads SynopsisNeil Josten is the newest addition to the Palmetto State University Exy team. He’s short, he’s fast, he’s got a ton of potential—and he’s the runaway son of the murderous crime lord known as The Butcher.
Signing a contract with the PSU Foxes is the last thing a guy like Neil should do. The team is high profile and he doesn’t need sports crews broadcasting pictures of his face around the nation. His lies will hold up only so long under this kind of scrutiny and the truth will get him killed.
But Neil’s not the only one with secrets on the team. One of Neil’s new teammates is a friend from his old life, and Neil can’t walk away from him a second time. Neil has survived the last eight years by running. Maybe he’s finally found someone and something worth fighting for.
My Review5 stars
I’m slightly obsessed with this.
I read about 50 pages at first and literally had no clue what was going on and was slightly dying inside because I was really hoping to enjoy this. So I started again from page one and oh my god I am so glad I did because this was great.
Second time around I got so much more invested in the characters, Nora is really great at setting up this world and these characters are all great. I still have no clue really what exy is exactly but it seems awesome.
I think maybe every character needs some therapy and a big hug but they all seem really cool.
It’s taking every thing I have to not go on tumblr and look up the fanart and the moodboards because I do not want to be spoiled for this. Unfortunately that means I’m going to have to wait until the new year when I can buy the final two books and continue the story.
Quotes“It’s not the world that’s cruel. It’s the people in it.”
“Hope was a dangerous, disquieting thing, but he thought perhaps he liked it.”
“Family means something different with us because it has to. It’s not about blood. It’s not even about who we like. It’s about who Andrew’s willing to protect.”
“God damn it, Minyard. This is why we can’t have nice things.”
“Exy was a bastard sport, an evolved sort of lacrosse on a soccer-sized court with the violence of ice hockey, and Neil loved every part of it.”
“It’s about second chances, Neil. Second, third, fourth, whatever, as long as you get at least one more than what anyone else wanted to give you.”
“How’s that target on your back feel?” “Familiar,” Neil said.”
“Money greases the wheels of the world easier than blood does, and Riko has access to both.”“Welcome to the Foxhole Court.”
