review 1: The best thing about this book is that the main character is often listening to other good young adult books on her ipod.It is a fairly sweet story about a girl seeking new friends and trying to decide whether joining up with a dungeons and dragons group makes her too much of a nerd (despite the fact that she is a mathlete and sews her own skirts). Jessie feels betrayed when one of her oldest friends goes out the boy she has always liked. (Includes a fairly graphic description of details of what goes wrong in that relationship--ruining the innocence of this novel.)
review 2: A somewhat light story about a teen girl finding the self-respect and self-confidence to seek a new crowd when old friendships sour. I found Jessie's narrative voice a little annoying. Too ... moremany parenthetical asides and rambling self-interruptions slowed down the narrative. That said, it was a realistic voice; it made me think this was what a novel would sound like if I wrote it. :)Other reviewers have commented on Jessie's judgemental attitude and lingering criticism of the "nerd" characters, but personally, I found these details rang true. Certainly, there are many teens who are more mature by their junior year in high school, but many are not. Altogether an enjoyable read. There is a bit of frank talk about sex and STIs, which raises the age of the audience somewhat. less
