review 1: Oh my gosh, we're in the final stages! Only one volume left?!Honestly, I really enjoyed the central group of five getting reunited, even if only for a short while; there was such a sense of foreboding in these chapters, and yet even amid that, there were still those brighter moments of hope and friendship. Gosh, this series kills my heart...How could you leave us without knowing exactly what happened with Oz and Zwei/Echo, Ms. Mochizuki? Gah, I'm so curious! The anticipation! That last scene...I will no mention it. All I'll say is that I cried a bit. WHY?!Seeing as Volume 23 has not even been released in Japan yet, there's no telling when Yen Press will have it out, so it's definitely going to be a while. Here's to hoping I don't give in and spoil the ending for my... moreself.
review 2: This review is for the last few volumes, and includes spoilers throughout. The art has actually continued to improve, and the characters only get cuter the longer this goes. As for the story, I thought we were pretty much past the major, game-changing twists, but apparently not. Pandora Hearts has gone meta! Suddenly, fan fictions can be canon compliant. I'm not entirely sure about the 'common enemy' direction, but there's certainly been nothing negative about it yet.The characters are still some of the best developed characters I've ever seen, with some of the best-portrayed themes. The character most worth mentioning in this review is probably Break. His death was heartbreaking, and completely unexpected in that context. I don't think any of us thought he would die then, in that way. It was brilliant- The theme of Pandora Hearts is letting go of the past, and moving on to the future instead. Break didn't get to accomplish his goal, but that can now be passed to someone like Sharon. He didn't get to complete his goal, he didn't die because of an expected relationship, he died to help Vincent, of all people, helping him move forward, setting potential new paths for everyone. His life and death directly affected several influential characters, and we've already seen what the ripples of Break's life have done. He died, but he's a victor. It was one of the best ways to show a theme I've ever seen, as tearjerking as it was. Break realizing that he didn't want to die, dying in the arms of the people closest to him, Sharon holding onto his dead body, still, Reim protecting his body, and Vincent becoming completely unsure of himself... it's all been so poignant.Speaking of Vincent, his story and development has probably been my personal favorite, and maybe the one I relate to most. I'm always somehow surprised that he gets the storyline and respect he does, since usually a character like him doesn't get such a story. Usually a character like him would have maybe one moment of doubt, and then die doing something good, but without any of the depth and possibility for a longer, living redemption arc like Vincent gets. The fact that he's one of the main characters has always been awesome to me. His storyline continues to surprise me, and he just carried the 'moving forward' theme in an amazing way, too. As it turns out, it's not Gilbert that is getting through to him, or even Ada, it's Break, who he half-hated, and Leo. Seeing Vincent doubt himself, and cry, and struggle to cope with Break's death both killed and revived something in me. I'm excited for him while my heart breaks for him. I'm so happy that he wants to live now, and I'm starting to think he may really survive this. (Though at this point, I trust that if Jun wrote a death for him, it would be the death he deserves) Early on, I never thought I could hope that he could be one of the major heroes in this story, but things seem to be heading that way. A character arguably more main than him just died for him and I struggle to even find words for my feelings. My 'mirror character' is being told he's worth something, has been given new reasons to live, and it's all just perfect. I'm looking forward to future Vincent/Ada moments, as well...The same goes for Leo- As it turns out, it was not something related to Elliot to get through to him, it was feeling protective of Vincent. Bless this story and its characters.Another scene that was really great to me was the one between Reim and Lily. It's yet another good example of something Break affected, and the perfect conclusion to their earlier scene. I think their friendship may be one of my favorite relationships in the series.I'm excited as ever to find out where the story is going, and what deal Oz made with Jack! I'm sad the series is ending, but all good things must. I just hope I can find something to fill the hole afterward.Current favorite characters- Vincent, Break, Jack, and Gilbert.Rating: I think these volumes were PG13ish. It's the same or less of what's already happened. less
