review 1: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was ignorant of this time period in China and was enlightened in an enjoyable way. The book was very well written and researched. Where opinions were given they were explained in detail. I was fascinated by this story of a remarkable woman during a tumultuous time. I would highly recommend this book. It does take a little time to read if you are like me and need to refer back to maps and family trees. But worth every minute and I'm looking forward to reading more from Chang. gbash
review 2: The reason I gave this just 3 stars is more to do with the fact that biographies rarely interest me. This however was more engaging than most I have read.It is about a woman who had immense success at a time in which women were valued very l... moreittle if at all which is inspiring to women. It is written in a fairly engaging manner & is a thorough account of Empress Dowager Cixis life. For people who know little about thia period of time & China it is very insightful. less
