review 1: After The Passage, I found the second installment to be a bit of a disappointment. I felt that The Passage was just so haunting and compact (if a 700 page book can be said to be compact). I felt that too many of the scenes and sequences in the second book were boilerplate vampire/zombie apocalypse set pieces. I also felt that the denouement seemed to paint the author into a corner (I won't say much more without causing spoilers). I will read the third book, but I am dubious.
review 2: In the second book of Cronin's vampire trilogy, readers are once again exposed to a human-made apocalypse as they witness a government experiment go array, turning humanity into vampire-like creatures known as virals, destroying everything in their path. Those who survive the ... moreattacks, between a period of when the attacks first began (known as "Year Zero") and 97 years later, seek not only refuge but also the answer that will eliminate the viral plague and defeat the dictatorship that has risen to power. Cronin's intricate plotting and skilled prose bring a new world to life; his characters feature the damaged and the heroic, including some strong female characters, and the scope of his story entreats likable comparisons to other epic authors such as Tolkien and Stephen King. Readers who were surprised by the cliffhanger at the end of the first book will find some resolution in this book, but also some new surprises and developments that will make them anxious for the next book. Readers who enjoy thrillers, science fiction and epic adventure novels will love this. less
