review 1: What I expected of the plot was this: Terra has an ugly side, she undergoes the surgery, she stays ugly for three months because it takes three months to see the results, she meets this hot Asian guy, but even if she is not exactly what the society deems as beautiful, Jacob the hot Asian guy accepts her for who she is and likes her still (rolls eyes), then whoa, she actually becomes surgically healed after three months and the flaw is gone forever and they live happily ever after. Was I wrong. The book had lots of beautiful surprises. It surprised me with a heroine full of courage. I was a bit irritated with Terra at first because she was whiny with her flaw. I did not like her reactions to the people around her who was trying to be kind to her. But she redeemed herself in t... morehe end. I am glad she grew up. Her views, especially her self-image beliefs, matured. I underestimated Terra.I commend the book's stand to real beauty. The beauty it tackles transcends the traditional beauty that the social order dictates. I thought it would be a pretentious read, fighting for "the beauty within". Usually, one would expect that if the person in a story has a physical flaw, his/her "great character" would compensate for that. But the way Miss Chen-Headley wrote it, it was different. It did not talk much about character actually. It was more of accepting oneself's physicality and celebrating one's individuality. And that, is real beauty.
review 2: It's decent. The story's nice, with not everything turning out perfect, but it wasn't the kind of ending I liked - I would've preferred some other bad things to happen and some other good events to occur to a side character. I would've even preferred it all to be tragedy-like, but...eh.Oh well. That's just the events in the book; I enjoyed the writing overall otherwise. It was enough to have me quickly devour the book in a couple hours, at least. less
