review 1: Fate, predetermination, and love...a dangerous cocktail to be sure. The author sometimes awkwardly weaves too many threads into one long love story in this ambitious story. In the afterword we understand the author himself combined two story ideas into this one novel. first, the story of Azalea Ivey, a young lost girl who, through a series of unfortunate incidents, ends up far away from her English home being lovingly raised on a Mission in Uganda. Never knowing her past, she begins to uncover a pattern of coincidences in her life that obsess her and lead her to the authority on coincidences to help her sort out her life. Second is Thomas Post: a young bumbling professor whose life work explaining the mathematics of coincidences is blown away by Azalea's story. How they wo... morerk through this conundrum and whether true love will prevail take the reader on a journey from a small county fair through police stations, a hippie's squat in an abandoned warehouse, a family dynasty of mission work, to a frightening confrontation with Kony himself. Add in a nod to Mama Mia (which of 3 fathers is hers? Or is it the men who raised her?) and you can understand the confusion. However, the book did keep my interest and it was helpful that I had a long flight during which to read most of it. I was glad and horrified to be reminded of the overlooked tragedy that are Uganda's lost children at the hand of the LRA and the atrocities enacted upon them in the false name of God. The ending was rather abrubt, but fitting. Fate, perchance???
review 2: I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads. I enjoyed this book! At first, you can see the coincidences, but then you can't...are they real or just our imagination? So many questions, and some answers, but other questions pop up then. Is there really coincdences or not? Azalea has many occurances, and they all are lining up, but will she really die because of them? I like the characters of Thomas and the professor in the story; they really add to it. The book is well written and a very good read. less

Really enjoyed this novel, interesting story... Maybe a bit too much philosophizing for my tastes.
