review 1: Mel is owner of a small town family Tree Farm. Bryce is the CEO of the company mining Natural Gas from Mel's beloved town. They first got together 2.5 years ago, but when Bryce asked Mel to come with him, Mel turned him down. As the Christmas Wedding of their two best friends approaches Bryce shows back up in Mel's life ready to try again. This was a sweet Christmas story. It could have been much richer if it had been longer and would have made a good full length novel. Overall it felt a little thin and predictable, but good for what it is.
review 2: I've read a bunch of KA Mitchell now. She's not my favorite author, but she always puts out a quality, professional product. And this story is no exception.I really like the setting in this one, for some reason. The
... more MC Mel feels trapped being in charge of his family's Christmas tree farm. And for some reason, never really made clear enough, he has a very hard time trusting others with his heart. When his "one-that-got-away" love, Bryce -- the rich owner of the gas company that's been buying mineral rights all over the county -- shows up out of the blue a few days before Christmas, and his best friend suddenly needs to hold her wedding at the tree farm within just a few days' time, Mel's life is thrown into turmoil.I liked this story, but I never quite bought into it completely. For instance, we never learn why Bryce is suddenly determined to win Mel -- he's been gone for three years, what has changed? And we never really know why Mel is such an untrusting control freak -- sure, he had the tree farm dumped on him, and sure, his two previous serious boyfriends (one of them Bryce) ended up leaving him, but is that all there is to it? And really, how silly was it for Mel to panic that way when Bryce tried to propose to him on Christmas Eve? So -- I enjoyed the setting and, in general, the descriptions of Mel's inner angsting, but I didn't quite make the leap from the foundations we're given to the end results. Still a pretty enjoyable read, though. less
