review 1: * Book provided by the author for an honest review *I can't tell you all how much I loved this erotic, thrilling, captivating and suspenseful novel. All the right elements needed to keep me invested in this story.A story about a beautiful aspiring music composer, innocent? Maybe. A sexy, powerful and famous composer falling in love and fighting to stay together, for how long can they hang on, that is up to the forces that try to pry them apart. Serena is young and ambitious, her only dream is to become a famous composer like Sebastian, her hopefully soon to be mentor. She will do anything to achieve her goal and there is where she accepts an offer from him that changes both of their lives forever. In the beginning we see Serena as an innocent and as we delve deeper into th... moree novel things are not as it seems, for both of them. There are sides to both of them that neither knows about.Twists and turns having us frantically turning the pages and eagerly awaiting an outcome we wish to find but get to see that maybe it won't turn out the way we hoped. Kailin Gow does an amazing job at keeping us guessing and thinking what we know might happen, might not actually come to be. Danger and mystery flow thru this story keeping us alert. Passion that is so intense and powerful will have you panting. I loved every single second of The Protege and can't wait to read the next in the series, The Innocent.
review 2: Was pleased to be one of the beta readers for the ARC on this, though my copy came late...This is a slight departure from Kailin Gow's "usual" writing, but only slight as her character building, human interactions, and emotional undertones still are a major part of the story. It is a departure in that it is aimed at a slightly more adult audience due to the level of steaminess included in it. The storyline left a person wanting more, and thankfully she is working on the next book n the series already! There are characters barely introduced in this first adult novel that I am hoping she will go into greater depth in the next book. Her characters, even the minor ones, seem to intrigue me.Of course, the main male and female leads are fantastic. It is not easy to box one of Gow's protagonists into a mold; I feel there is a lot more to be seen from both Sebastian and Serena that we have barely seen the surface of. There is more back story there than has been given in The Protege, leaving me wanting, NEEDING, to know more of them. The sexual content in the book is done well, not too graphic but not tip-toed around. There is undertones of S&M, without fully diving into unneccesary smut levels. It is sexy, provocative, as opposed to cheesy and overplayed.Definately worth a read whether or not you have read any of Gow's other works ( which I can also highly recommend ). less
