review 1: Well, I certainly like this book much better than Catherine, Called Birdy. I felt like the characters were developed better and the story was more engaging. It's still not my favorite, and having just read another book by Cushman, I recognized pet phrases of hers that were a bit annoying. Still, the overall message was a good one of friendship and trust. I also appreciated less focus on shock factor items. Not bad, but probably not one I'd anxiously recommend to anyone.
review 2: A story about a runaway boy who falls in with a traveling sideshow of "curiosities," this story held my interest and was chock-filled with fascinating details of life in 16th century England. Will is defiantly suspicious of relationships after being hurt, cheated and abandoned. Sadly,
... more I felt that the author systematically led me through Will's emotional change, and I knew where it was going. I wish I'd felt Will's emotions instead of being told what they were. Still, a good read. less

this is another satisfying Cushman historical fiction, though not my favorite.
