review 1: This was the first Karen Harper I've read. The concept was intriguing, but the delivery could have been stronger. The character development wasn't quite there, and some of the suspension-of-disbelief threads were so out there that they pulled me out of the story. I prefer much tighter writing, especially with this genre. Overall, I think a good editor could have worked with the author to tighten the pace, smooth the rough edges, and flesh out the characters. With those changes, it could have been a 3 or even 4 star book. As it is, though, this goes onto my "Once is enough" shelf.
review 2: I had a hard time putting this down. So much going on what with all the startling revelations after her father's death. An enjoyable book but for some reason I was really bot... morehered by the fact that she didn't stay with her brother. Her mom abandoned her, never kept in touch; her father kept up the charade because of the murder charge and still she forgave completely. And the scene where her mom discovered her on the lap of the violin teacher and grabbed her arm and threw her across the room so she could shoot the guy left a bad taste in my mouth. By all means, that death was understandable but throwing your child across the room? I don't know... All in all I rated it a "4" because it was very interesting! less
