review 1: Arson brings Nate MacKenzie to Amish country where he meets Sarah Kauffman who paints murals on barns. Stangely only the barns with her paintings on them are singled out by the arsonist. As Nate struggles without much success to find the culprit, he and Sarah draw closer and closer. The Amish do not believe in self pride, in making or keeping anything of beauty. Everything must have a use but Sarah has itchy hands that long to draw and paint, not just quilt patterns but people as well. Then there is Nate, the man she is falling for but who will never be Amish.I enjoy Karen Harper's books and have become a dedicated reader but this one contained the phrase, "deaf and dumb." Ordinarily I would have slammed it up and read no further but having already been reeled out, I conti... morenued on.I beg authers, please do not write "deaf and dumb." All you need to write is "deaf." Deaf people are very insulted by "deaf and dumb," just as black people are by the "N" word. Please consider that. Ther are more of us than you think. That is a lot of readers to lose!
review 2: Despite a beautiful setting in rural Ohio amid quiet, peace-loving Amish, Karen Harper's book has suspense, mystery, and a little romance. I liked becoming more familiar with Amish ways and seeing them just as people. Harper does a good job of relating the Amish community to the "outsiders" who live in the area. One outsider, arson investigator Nate MacKenzie, investigates barn burnings with respect for the Amish ways. Sarah, who seems to be the target of the arson because of her quilt paintings on the barns, guides Nat and they both try to resist the attraction they feel to each other. Harper creates characters that I cared about. I finished this quickly because I need to read the next book in the series for my book club. I'm glad I did because "Return to Grace" is like returning home. For a good, uplifting story that also keeps you involved with the mystery with several story lines, I recommend this book. less
