review 1: This is just the right length to give new readers a taste for Ms. Hawkins's full-length stories...and if they're all like this, they're delicious! I was so tempted by this story that I went shopping right away for more by Ms. Hawkins. I like the no-nonsense heroine who, having lost her first husband due to an accident, goes about in a very straight-forward way to hunting for another husband. I even like the misguided hero who, having lost a sister due to an accident that he blames himself for, tries hard not to fall in love with the heroine because he doesn't want to love and lose again. Very real, human emotions in this story that predictably bring about a happy-ever-after ending, but which only add to Ms. Hawkins's great character building. I recommend this story hi... moreghly to readers of romance.
review 2: I didn't enjoy this at all and I know Karen Hawkins can do better. I don't believe in a heroine who sets off to Scotland to find a husband based on the strength of her Scottish tutor's description of Scotland. I don't believe in a heroine who falls in love with pretty much the first Scot she has a conversation with and then pretty much tells him to "get in mah belly," except it wasn't belly that she said. I don't believe in a hero who's decided he can never love anyone based on one freak accident that happened to a woman he once loved. Could this have been better if it was longer? Maybe, since some of the things I objected to, I objected to because they happened so fast. It's been a long time since I've read a Karen Hawkins book but I remember enjoying them. This was not the book to bring me back into the fold. less
