review 1: I've read a lot about O'Keeffe's life, so I didn't learn much new from reading this book, which was chosen by my book club. But to be fair, this was not advertised as a difinitive scholarly biography. The structure was intriguing. The author grouped anecdotes about O'Keeffe's life into themes like "defy, grow, adopt...", regardless of chronology. This approach revealed some personality traits and influences in a fresh way. I had a problem with the author's inserting her own life anecdotes along with the O'Keeffe anecdotes, but some book club members found that this approach made the book more conversational, as did the author's practice of directly addressing the reader. This book is a hybrid of biography and self-help text targeted toward women.
review 2: This
... more was highly entertaining. I don't think I've read a biography with such rampant sarcasm, and somehow it was not inappropriate. Much of the humor was focused on the issues in Georgia's life that make you go ...hmmm...she did what? he did WHAT? seriously? No white washings apologists or sugar coatings here. And it works, i really enjoyed this one, read the last 120 pages in one night. The book really is a tribute to a woman who defied everything and everyone just by being herself. And how lucky she was to have done that as well as she did WHEN she did. You go girl. less

Love Georgia O'Keeffe but not a big fan of Karen Karbo's style of writing.
