review 1: Anyone who follows my reviews knows that I very rarely give 5 stars on Goodreads. 'Nuff said? Well, no -- but obviously I found this book a rare delight.Lord combines skilled world-building, wonderful main characters, intriguing secondary characters, and an intriguing variety of essentially-human species with a fairly low-key and almost picaresque plot. That's an unusual combination of elements, and she pulls it off beautifully. I will be hunting down more of her novels forthwith.
review 2: Almost as if it were inspired by Star Trek, this rather picaresque travelogue set on another planet is inhabited by variant humans from a variety of worlds, nearly all of them seem like the Star Trek style aliens (Vulcans and Romulans especially, but also Betazoids and Carda
... moressians and so on). Many people have compared the plot to a season of a television show, with chapters playing the part of episodes. Each chapter has its own main plot and also may advance the arcs of the overall novel a notch or two. I have read other genre novels with similar structure (John Brunner's Traveller in Black, Tanith Lee's Cyrion, are a couple of examples) and find them very engaging. The characters in this story are endearing and interesting, more lovable than fascinating, but people I did not at all mind spending hours with while reading of their adventures. The world and culture building of the author is unique and well done. It is not literally the best world, but it sure is a good one. less

I really liked the writing and the writer's voice, but the story was not to my taste.

Just a solid science fiction read, one that you can dive into completely.

An otherworldly love story...but a subtle one. Nice read.

I found this a nice, slow, character-based novel.
