review 1: I chose this book because I kept seeing rave reviews on Book Riot. This was a plane/travel book for me. While the novella format was nice, I did not mesh 100% with this book. Maybe it is my fault for not finishing it in one sitting, but I felt like I was continually climbing the rising action plot point with this book only to fall not after reaching the climax or the falling action, but because the book was simply over. Maybe this novella deserves a more focused read. Maybe I should wait until the next time I can't go to sleep. That way I already have a connection to the plot and can connect more.
review 2: Ugh. I wanted to like this so much. I have Russell's "Swamplandia!" burning a whole through my bookshelf. But I just couldn't. The plot here is stagnant, th... moree premise barely original, characters more like sketches of characters. We don't even get an ending, in an meaningful way. And can authors please, please stop pointlessly setting everything in present tense? It's not edgy, it's merely annoying. less
