review 1: I'll give this 4 stars, but I really feel like it was 3.5. This is a collection of modern short stories. Some were so good, I would race through them. They were fantastical and the writer brought you into a world that you never imagined. In keeping with this, the last short story jumped the shark. It took you to a place of disbelief that made you go- huh- this was a crappy last story. So, this book was a crap shoot- but, I felt like the first few stories were unbelievably good.
review 2: Having recently discovered a love for short stories, I'm trying out lots of new authors. I find that even more so than novels, I seem to have a strong reaction to the writer's style. I listened to the first three stories in this collection on audio, and it wasn't my thing. So, ... morethis is not a dis-recommendation to other readers. Many reviewers I often share tastes with seem to love Karen Russell's work. I think short stories may distill the essence of what we love about fiction, and whereas, perhaps, a longer novel may be loved by different readers for many different reasons, perhaps what strikes a reader in a short story is more personal? less
