review 1: I found the spanish version of this book (Por Partes) and decided to give it a shot. I had high expectations about Hotakainen because my father truly seemed to love one of his books, which I'd given him for Christmas (Juoksuhaudantie). ”Por Partes” wasn't bad, but it could have been better. I'm giving Hotakainen the benefit of the doubt, and assume the awkwardly constructed sentences are the result of a clumsy and at times overly literal translation- the words just didn't flow right and I found myself often re-reading bits to make sense of them. The story was ok, but the actual conflict was introduced so late in the story, it kind of didn't even matter by then? It seemed the novel was meant to be driven by the characters and not by action, which would've been fine if t... morehese characters had done anything other than struggle to earn their bread. What I liked best: the truly amusing character of Pekka and his misadventures. What I liked least: that the black immigrant is portrayed as a racist who views Finns as an inferior race and through whom the author makes the harshest criticisms of finnish society. I don't think it's necessary to explain why that bothered me. Anyway, the book was still entertaining enough to keep me reading, just don't know if I would recommend it to others. Will still give Juoksuhaudantie a try.
review 2: No mä tykkäsin tästä, se tuli luettua nopeasti, mikä on hyvän kirjan merkki. En lue niin paljon suomalaisten kirjailijoiden tuotantoa, koska ne on yleensä aika synkistelyä. Mutta kuten edellinen arvioija sanoi tässä oli huumori pohjavireenä, mikä auttoi vaikkei ihmisillä kovin hyvin aina mennytkään. Salme oli musta mainio, esim. "minä en ole joutsen" -kommentti nauratti. Kaikinpuolin kiinnostava lukukokemus erilaisten ihmisten näkökulmista. Samaanaikaan luettuna oleva Coelho jäi sohvalle. less
