review 1: It gets darker and darker for the rather flawed and unreliable narrator, but is just as compelling a mystery as the first in the series. The Earl is a much flatter character in this sequel; his motivations seem a bit muddled, even when he explains them. However, the hero's internal monologue about her feelings for the earl are equally unbelievable, so I am fine to chalk this up to the protagonist's perception of the situation, and to the portrayed culture of the time.
review 2: I really enjoyed Cherry St. Croix in Tarnished, but was slightly disappointed by Gilded. I liked her outrageous character collecting criminals and solving crimes in the first novel. The second novel, I found her to be a weaker character, giving in to the marriage conundrum and fighting o... moreff bouts of weakness constantly. I feel like it lost the excitement that I found in the first novel. I am hoping that the third will return to the dynamic action of the first book. less
