review 1: I liked this book. I'm a fan of Karl Pilkington and his poignant humor. After all, he's got a round head, that when shaved, looks even rounder, and he does project the stand-point of an absolutely average bloke, for lack of a better term.A friend once told me she loved the way his mind works. Well, after watching the series and reading the book, I can definitely hop into that boat. Despite his pettiness (A $2 opened Milky Way stashed away in a mini-bar, seriously?) he gives precise words to some of the more incredulous experiences in the environments he's encountered, and is straightforward with people, which in my book is an admirable quality. Karl lets us in on many things that were not in the televised version of An Idiot Abroad. One particular inside-look I enjoyed gr... moreeatly was at the very end of his journey, while on the phone with Stephen Merchant. The show omitted an important (at least to me) chunk of their conversation. In the book this is fully transcribed (as are several other telephone conversations with Stephen and Ricky) and interesting to read.Either way, in the show, and in the book, Pilkington is as honest as he can be. He's not selling you anything, and the conclusions he comes to after seeing all of the Wonders shine in their simplicity. As well as his skepticism as to why these places are so revered. It's always refreshing to encounter an opinion that is based on objective facts, as well as keen observation. Also, every time he compared his predicament to a Michael Palin show was a laugh-out-loud moment for me.Karl's mind works the way it does because it is open (well, not when it comes to stuff he doesn't want to pay for from the mini-bar). I am reminded of something another friend once said (yes, I've got many friends), and that is: most people go through their whole lives without ever using the ability of reasoning.Karl Pilkington is definitely not such a person. His travel diary was a nice, quick, funny read. I would recommend it anybody.
review 2: The label of "idiot" is a misnomer, or at least an incomplete classification of Karl Pilkington. The man is an idiot savant. However, having seen the television series, the book was mostly a rehash of what he'd seen and said. But I enjoyed the gems of his absurd wisdom and the book gave me the chance to laugh again at what I'd forgotten having seen the program a few years back. Of course there was new material. Whatever Karl is thinking shoots out of his mouth with no tact or regard for social acceptability. In this case, the same deal was in print. He's lovable, rude, and kinda...brilliant. A quick read, and I've since purchased three more of his books. less
