review 1: This is about a young boy who lives in India with his family. They grow onions but when there is a bumper crop of onions they lose out on a profit and move to Mumbai. The young boy, desperate to help his family, is tricked into working in a 'sweatshop' . Here he meets with other boys who have been living there in awful conditions, never allowed to leave or see their families. The book is aimed at older children and is an excellent portrayal of labour markets, economics and the exploitation of child labourers. While it deal with difficult themes it is not sentimental or gruesome - yet it is a story that should be read for the reality it conveys.
review 2: It was very difficult, and still is, to stomach the idea of a kid, an 11 or 12 year old boy, selling anot
... moreher kid into slavery. The author details a subject that many of us are not aware of or willingly turn a blind eye to. We buy our clothes without thinking of who made them. There is a possibility that what we wear could be the result of child slavery. Talk about a hard concept to stomach. What I love most about this book is Gopal, the main character. He is a lover of stories; he loves reading and telling them. Because of his ability to dream and imagine, he is able to save himself and his friends from a horrible fate. If there was ever a book that promoted the importance of and power of stories, it is Boys Without Names. less
