review 1: A wide ranging exploration of sleep. The book reviews what is understood about the sleep cycle and delves into topics such as sleep medication, changes in child sleeping arrangements, artificial light, and dreaming. Each topic included good information and for me some new observations. Sleep medications do not restore healthy sleep they just hide disordered ones, perpetuating the problem. Norepinephrine, a kind of adrenaline, is lowered during REM sleep which may help explain the "overnight therapy" effect by helping remove emotion from events when replayed by the brain. During WWII converted factories prevented the replacement of broken clocks which led to workplace havoc, making clock companies the first to resume production. Dr. V. S. Ramachandran explained that "In a s... moreense, we are all hallucinating all the time. What we call normal vision is our selecting the hallucination that best fits reality." My primary complaint about the book is that while the author specifically calls out not wanting to include too much of her own dreams and conjectures into the book, she does, especially in later chapters and perpetuates the myth about dreams and coincidence. Overall it is a good read and a great introduction into the world of sleep but there are better books.
review 2: This book was given to me as part of a Goodreads Giveaway. Thanks to Kat Duff for the copy :)There isn't really much to say about the book. a good book that taught me a lot about sleep with some super cool quotes and rhymes. If I was taking a course about sleep this would be really good recommended reading. Granted it might be dry if you don't really want to learn much but it's overall not a bad book. less

I wish this book was around many years ago. The section on children's sleep was very enlightening.
