review 1: This book is an inspiring read. It contains solid friendships, love, injustice and bullying. Alice, the main character, is fiercely loyal and hates injustice - especially when it happens because someone thinks their way is the only way. Her relationship with the antagonists son, Samuel, suffers when he doesn't have the guts to stand up to his overbearing father. Alice has what they used to call "gumption" and I couldn't help routing for her. Read this. You will love it!
review 2: I've apparently been reading a lot of poorly-written books lately and my standards have dropped. Two pages into this, I came back to Goodreads and downgraded the star ratings of the last several I finished. THIS is a beautifully-written book. The historical setting is perfect, the char... moreacters are real and engaging and the story is believable and moving. If you want to enjoy a quality read, this is it. less
