review 1: I really enjoyed this book quite a lot. The cover really pulled me in and the synopsis was interesting enough that I wanted to know more about the story and characters. Let me just start of by saying that this books starts off slow, and it's pretty much slow-paced all throughout. Sometimes I found myself wishing something would happen, some action like a fight or actually someone doing something because it felt like they spent a lot of time just talking and not doing anything other than stay at that one place. PRetty much after they discovered Briand's power I thought the story was going to pick up and there would be a lot of action and kick-ass moments where she would show everyone just how awesome she was but no, instead I found myself reading about their extensively lon... moreg journey to reach that one safe house and then about Briand not being educated enough so they had to teach her about several things, including language and stuff about dragons. Which brings me to my next point, once dragons was mentioned in this book, I thought it was going to be super interesting once dragons were involved, and that a lot of cool interactions with dragons were going to happen, but they only showed up for a few pages. But regardless of that disappointing part, I admit the story overall was well told and I liked the world building. It was nice to read about a different world where things like this happens. Either way, I still would have liked a better clarification of people's ages, like Kael for instance. Based on the synopsis, I thought that he was going to be the love interest of Briand seeing as how he was handsome and she spent a lot of time with him in the book and it seemed like she was starting to develop feelings for him, but the more I read, and when I actually finished it, I found myself wondering when something, if anything, was going to happen! I was a little disappointed in the romance aspect but still enjoyed that at least there wasn't a romance that was going to take from the plot and overall story. The ending really got to me though! I wasn't expecting it all- one second I was engrossed in the action of the story and the next I was reading the cliffhanger ending! I found myself cursing the characters for the last few moments and rereading that ending but still, I can't wait for the next book to come out and see what happens next to Briand and Kael and the rest of the crew!
review 2: When I got this as a Goodreads Giveaway it was just what I needed. A girl denied her birthright suddenly, and almost mistakenly, comes into powers that let her communicate with dragons assuming one can be found. The rebel without a cause finds one thrust upon her and she becomes the unlikely heroine of a grand adventure. Yes, the plot is a classic Ya fantasy archetype, but my mood and the writing made it so engrossing that I can't wait to see what happens in the next novel assuming it gets written. :) less
