review 1: This is a curly one - a talented Australian author, and an unusual storyline : an unconventional love between two very different people, with the narrator dying early in the story. Well written but somehow the idea of a woman (however talented as an artist and 'wild at heart') leaving every few months for some sexual R and R, even when pregnant, left me feeling a bit squeamish...the self loathing of her husband and his constant questioning of their relationship became, in the end, a refrain centred around self abasement.
review 2: I was intrigued with how the characters would play out in this story. Who would I like? Dislike? Feel sorry for? I was surprised to learn I liked all the characters, flaws and all. I loved how the story unfolded through multiple POV
... more's. It was more satisfying learning more about each one in this way. This story had so many layers to it. Each character showed growth as the story progressed. This was a central element to my curiosity and the flashbacks and present day scenes allowed this to happen. Very clever Kate Belle! Being Jade was a love story, although unconventional. Jade was unwavering in herself and in what she was/was not willing to sacrifice. Belle wrote Jade's character so well I found myself admiring Jade rather than viewing her as selfish. Being Jade was also an insightful look into the dynamics of family and the roles each member plays. Well worth a read! less
