review 1: I had a hard time decided on how many stars to give this book. I had some issues with the plot, and some of the characters. The main character felt more like an idea than a fully fleshed out character. A male character that I found interesting at the start, was mishandled and then dropped. I felt that this was a wasted opportunity. I ended up giving this book three stars because while I had issues with, I still found it somewhat entertaining.
review 2: Started out with a heavy handed message about environmentalism in the prologue then was slow for a bit. Once things get going though its quite an exciting story! The heroine does cry an awful lot (she even admits this) and seems to have no skills at all so she relies on Jack constantly. I would have liked to see ... morethe slavery issues resolved; maybe see some of the characters develop a little more compassion.But it turned out to be an exciting story and I loved Hawthorne!Hard to beat free but I might consider buying future books in this trilogy if they are inexpensive. less
