After we brought my puppies home last year we were strict on not letting them climb on the furniture, or we tried to be. We knew that letting them be on the couch or our beds was said to be a big NO NO and we tried to be strong; there was just one problem with this, they were so cute and so little. We didn’t know they could turn into furniture eating machines. We weren’t strong enough to handle saying no to this:
So here came the begging of the end of our couch. The innocent decision to let these adorable puppies sit on the couch WITH US
turned into letting them sleep there during the day,
which turned into them chasing each other and playing on the couch and eventually eating the couch.
I used to think, but how could those innocent little puppies do this?
Well, we let them; once they had all their teeth they didn’t know the difference between chewing on their toys and on our couch, they thought it was theirs and they just wanted to chew on everything. We let them climb on it, sleep on it, it was their huge chew toy.
We learned from our mistake, no matter how cute your puppies are don’t let them do whatever they want, they are like children and they need rules. Not exactly like children but you know what I mean. Learn from our mistake; now that we don’t let them sleep on the couch they are just as happy sleeping on the floor and I’m right here with them, watching them from the couch. Also they are just as cute but now I am strong enough to say NO.
We also used to let them sleep on the bed during the day which is also a big mistake. The bed was made so they were on the comforter, not our bed sheets, but still that’s my bed not theirs. They have their own place in my room that is not MY bed.
