review 1: so honestly i wasn't a big fan of my gender workbook- i thought it was someone else's gender workbook, and while it spoke to people who needed to be spoken to, i couldn't quite relate. same sort of thing with hello cruel world. I think the problem is she writes how to books i don't need or for other people. So anyway, all that to say i ADORED this memoir. she has had such an AMAZING life. and scientology is SO. WEIRD. I kinda want to be known for living such an amazing adventure. but god, the letter at the end is just heartbreaking. So many people would LOVE to be Kate Bornstein's kid. It's so cruel that the one person who is has no interest in it.
review 2: Very interesting. She is famous in my circles because of Gender Outlaws, so I was aware of her, but
... more I hadn't read it, and certainly didn't know her history. The more I learn about cults/religions, the scarier and crazier they are. She is similar in age to my parents but they act like the older generation and she clearly went the free love way...I'm glad I read it and that she survived to write it, good book. less

Hard not to love this book. Totally entertaining and even an inside look at Scientology.

This book was intense and somewhat graphic and terrifying. It was also very educational.
