review 1: I realize that Bornstein is an activist and a much needed voice. That said . . . her self-obsession and narcissism made this book hard to read for me. Her love/promotion of self-cutting was disturbing but typical of BPD. In fact, her BPD is all over the book, which may be why I found it so hard to read. The Scientology stuff was interesting but so much more has been written about Scientology that her bit on it seemed light and fluffy in comparison. She is almost dismissive about her daughter and their sadly estranged relationship.Again, I hesitate to be critical because her voice is so needed. But my response to her writing style is that it is shallow and she clearly always needs to be the center of attention. It all read like so much skimming of the surface. The attempts ... moreat humour ("I've always wanted to write a sentence like that") fell flat for me.Bornstein has something to say, I just wish she could say it in a way that had more depth and less self-obsession.
review 2: Kate Bornstein should be required reading for everyone who is interested in gender or sexuality. Kate is brutally honest about her transgender identity and attempts to force herself to live as a man. She was drawn to Scientology in part because thetans (or spirits) have no gender--it seemed like a way to integrate how she felt with her effort to be a man. Kate is brutally honest about her experiences with anorexia, cutting, her fear over embracing her true self and everything that came with it, transphobia, and more. While at times slow, the book is absolutely compelling, and I had trouble putting it down. That I did so wanting to read everything else she has written is the best recommendation I can offer. less
