review 1: I was not aware that there was an entire group of people involved in Lincoln's assassination. Interesting account of Mary Surratt, who was the first woman hanged in the US for her involvement in the assassination. Raised a few questions about the Catholic Church's loyalties during the Civil War ... (Surratt was a Catholic, and her son, who also conspired in the plot, was hidden by a number of Catholic priests as he avoided punishment.)
review 2: The author's claim that Mary Suratt was certainly guilty of the crime for which she was executed seems supported by her evidence - and she does sound like she's putting any exculpatory stuff out there for us to look at. ... morehe gallows will ring down through history. After all, not everyone gets to be the first woman hanged by the government of the United State. But I found the story to be only partly engaging. The character of Mary never took on flesh and persona to me, also true of other characters. less
