review 1: Here's an example where high school students are much more interesting to me when they sound like clever, television-like, Dawson's Creek style high school students. I thought this was a really fun read as the kids tried to take down the reality show that took over their school. The art and literature may be a little high brow for a typical high school reader, but I liked how it had all the awkwardness of a teen boy narrator with little of the bathroom humor of other coming-of-age stories like Swim the Fly or Carter Finally Gets It.
review 2: This book was suggested to me by my wonderful, fearless leader-librarian. As a high school creative writing teacher and a Minnesotan, this book had a lot of things in it that appealed to me. I definitely know the cross s... moreection of kid this will appeal to. And even though the gerbil part seemed a little over the top for me as an adult, there's so many smart things going on in the text that I can forgive it. (Almost.) ;-) less
