review 1: Kate came to the Penzance Literary Festival to talk about her book. I read it beforehand as I was interviewing her. Often, if one has to read a book, it can be a bit of a chore, but Kate's book immediately grabbed my imagination. I am anyway interested in the Spanish Civil War, and am currently writing a book myself set in the context of that incredible, imagination-grabbing conflict, and there are so many books about it that it can be difficult to get a new perspective. I loved Kate's angle of weaving a contemporay story in amongst a very personalised view of the conflict. I also love to find out abut new things, and I knew nothing about Robert Capa and Gerda Taro - and the origins of war photo-journalism. I didn't feel it needed the modern romance element - but I prefer ... morehistorical fiction to romantic fiction, so I'm sure most people would love that element too.
review 2: What a disappointment. A setting and plot with so much potential, I even like the flicking between past and present - however it left wanting throughout. Key events in history watered down by a predictable plot, 2D characters and a general lack of depth. Just too many mentions of crisp white cotton, masculine jaws and effortless elegance - I had to double check a light-hearted romance novel hadn't slipped in between the covers - rather than the stimulating read the marketing promised. less
