So, September is over and done with and I managed to read 6 books (not quite as good as August, but a decent effort considering I’ve been very busy with returning to college this month). Check out my thoughts on the books I read below:
1. Favourite book of the month:
• I’d have to go for Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding, hands down! I’m not usually much of a fan of comedy books, but something about this one just tickled me. I think it was just the fact that, as a character, Bridget is so blunt that she’s incredibly relatable. And let’s be honest… is there any girl who doesn’t identify with this?!:
2. Least favourite book of the month:
• I’d probably have to say Pawns by Brian Gallagher. It was by no means a poor book (I still rated it 3.5/5!), I just didn’t enjoy it as much as the others I read. I think a large part of the problem was that 12-year-old protagonists just don’t really work in a book billed as ‘YA’. They were too young for me, and the interesting setting didn’t quite make up for the lack of character development. But, on the plus side, I suppose I did learn a lot more about the Irish war of Independence!
3. Longest book of the month: The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith (580 pages)
4. Shortest book of the month: Pawns by Brian Gallagher (256 pages)
List of books read in September:
• Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins (4/5)
• Pawns by Brian Gallagher (3.5/5)
• The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith (4/5)
• Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins (3.5/5)
• The Nowhere Girls by Amy Reed (4.5/5)
• Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding (5/5)
Verdict on the month:
I’m pretty happy with the amount I read, given September is always a busy one for us students. I also managed to stick to my monthly goals for once, as I finished reading the Hunger Games series and continued my Harry Potter reread (even though I didn’t finish the Potter book I started until October…).
In terms of the books I read, the lowest I rated a book was 3.5/5, so I’m pretty happy with the quality of what I read, too. I read pretty widely genre-wise, and finally bit the bullet and ticked The Silkworm off my TBR, once I got over my fear of its size. In terms of thought-provoking books, I’d like to take a moment to tell you all to read The Nowhere Girls by Amy Reed (my review will be appearing over at The Book Bag soon) when it’s released on October 10th. It’s great to see a YA novel finally discussing the issue of rape culture among teenagers, but managing to do so in a way that is sensitive and respectful to victims. If you’re a feminist, you’ll love this book. If you’re not a feminist, I guarantee you’ll be a covert by the end!
October TBR:
-Review more books for The Book Bag
-Continue with my Harry Potter reread
-Read at least one horror book before Halloween!
Well, that’s it for another month of reading! Why not let me know what you read in September in the comments?
Em x
