review 1: Most enjoyable book. It is set in a an England still heavily affected by the the recent carnage of the Great War. Evelyn is grieving for her brother but also guiltily aware that she would not be pursuing a career in the law if he had lived. As she investigates a murder case she also faces a new challenge when Meredith arrives with her nephew. This book brings alive the changing times of the Twenties as her straight-laced mother and aunt are confronted by the bohemian Meredith, and female lawyers confront the male dominated legal system.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book but the ending was rubbish. I had to take my rating down a peg or two just for the ending. This novel was published in 2010 and I just recently found it at the library but have since learned
... morea sequel will be released this year.... so I am wondering... was there always a sequel in the works or did the author decide to write one because so many hated the ending? Whatever. I will read it anyway. Good plot, good style, good pacing and character development... terrible, terrible conclusion. Only Hardy could get away with such bleakness. less

Although I got a bit bored by the end, I reckon this would make a good tv drama.
