review 1: The set up and world wasn't terrible but I feel like so much effort was spent painting a vivid world for the main character and the plot/conflict took a huge back seat. The antagonists were comical at best. I wanted to be intrigued by the court politics and opposition that Maia felt. It might be that Maia's own feelings and self confidence were the actual antagonists of the book, but the lack of detail to the coups would still bother me.
review 2: This is probably the best new fantasy I have read this year. It isn't Katherine Addison's first book, but i suspect (from reading the goodreads synopsis and reviews from her other books) that the practice was good for her, and resulted in this gem. It's not a fantastic adventure, it's not a deep metaphor for modern
... moresociety, it's not jungian psychology based wish fulfillment (I'm looking at you, David Eddings!). What is is, is a quiet story about a character that anyone can relate to, finding his way in a situation that anyone would find overwhelming and intimidating, with grace and good humour and above all, humility. If you're a character-driven reader you will love this book. If you are plot driven but care about characters, you will probably still love this book. less
