review 1: I've been avoiding this book because I figured it would be sad, and it was. It was worth it though. It's a good story, loosely based on actual events. It would make a great read aloud because the chapters are so quick and the story is very engaging. But I can't quite decide what age I think it'd be appropriate for. I could be being overly sensitive, because animal issues break my heart, but I wouldn't even read this to third-graders.
review 2: One of the best books I've read this year, and it happens to be a children's book. A beautifully written story of a group of zoo animals living in tiny enclosures in a mall. The story has this dark melancholic lyrical feeling to it. The idea of animals that talk to each other sounds like it would be silly but in this c... morease it's sad and heartbreaking. A really great book to teach kids about compassion and caring for animals. It gets them thinking about how animals communicate and feel towards each other and what it must be like to live in captivity. Definitely recommended! less
