review 1: Having loved Howe's debut novel I eagerly picked this one up only to be rather disappointed. Truly, what is the plot here? At one point I realized I was three fourths of the way through and was still waiting on a conflict to be introduced. Sibyl has a knack for scrying...so? At no point does this becoming a thing worth reading about. For being a story having to do with a family grieving their losses on the Titanic there was incredibly little to do with the ship. The few times we saw Helen and Eulah on Titanic you could have cut the chapters entirely and lost absolutely nothing. Could we at least break out the crystal ball and chat with Helen about the voyage? Give us something to make the connection meaningful.
review 2: I really, really, wanted to like The Hou
... morese of Velvet and Glass. Loved Howe's first title, and this had all the hallmarks of my favorites: Titanic history, that era's séance tables. Second time through, and still can't get past page 50. What the heck is going on here? I'm not one to waste my time on books that have no value to me, as there are so many good titles out there waiting. Goodreads should have a new category: TANKED. As it is, I have to click "read" to be able to sound off on a book, when actually, I've given up on it. Sad, this one. What a garbled mess. less
