review 1: The illustrations are gorgeous! They are made from cut paper, and are beautiful! There are some small, colored illustrations, too. Those are pretty, though they are less seen. I like the variety of poems and prayers and praises in the book, and that they are divided up into sections about different things. I like how there are quotes, poems, songs, prayers scattered in the book. They are from all different cultures and times. There is really something for everyone in this book!About the author and illustrator:Katherine Paterson is a two-time Newbery Medal winner and a two-time National Book Award winner.Pamela Dalton is a master of scherenschnitte. No I didn’t sneeze. Scherenschnitte is the art of paper-cutting. I think you will agree about Ms. Dalton’s master status w... morehen you look at the illustrations in the book.*NOTE I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
review 2: Fine collection of graces, blessings, bits of speeches, and sayings about gratitude and giving thanks. It would make a nice gift book for a grandparent--it's definitely a good one to page through from time to time to remind oneself about being thankful. Paterson adds thoughtful stories at the beginning of each chapter; my favorite was the reminder of how rich we are when we have enough food to eat. She recalls a Japanese friend whose family was greatly affected during WWII... They were so poor that the mother traded her wedding kimono for two tomatoes. My favorite quotes came at the end, in the "Circle of Community" chapter, about doing good things, showing your gratitude through action and love in that action. It's the Jesuit education, maybe, or the Peace Corps Volunteer.Do all the good you canBy all the means you canIn all the ways you canIn all the places you canTo all the people you canAs long as you ever can. -- John Wesley"Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world." -- Desmond Tutu less
