review 1: Oh, that precious first love. The kind that doesn’t go away, even when the person you love has. That’s what we get to experience with Emma in “Treasuring Emma” by Kathleen Fuller. This is book #1 in The Middlefield Family Series. Adam, in search of peace, even after joining the church, leaves his Amish home, his Amish community, and Emma. Emma is the lifelong best friend that surprisingly expresses her love for Adam. Does Adam find that peace out in the Yankee world? We’ll walk with him in this book as he tries to answer that very question. We are introduced to Clara & her husband Peter. Not quite the typical Amish marriage that we normally read about. If these two couples aren’t enough for you… then mix in Mark King. Mark is Peter’s sneaky Amish... more shyster cousin from Kentucky. You will put your guard up from the minute you meet him. And with good reason because he is up to no good. Don’t turn your back on him! Laura did, and she will forever pay for trusting Matt when tragedy strikes. If Kathleen’s aim was to keep us guessing, giving us a wonderful story, and have us wanting more when we finish that last page, then she hit the mark. I’m ready for the sequel… Faithful To Laura ~ It receives 5 Whoopie Pies from me ~
review 2: This is not the first Amish-novel I read. I read a lot of novels about Amish families by Wanda E. Brunstetter. From the very start, Treasuring Emma, a Middlefield Family Novel by Kathleen Fuller reads the same way. I was very amused to find a “glossary” with a translation of the Amish words used. Because I’m Dutch and speak German as well, most Dietsch words from the Amish language are not that strange to me. The story is about Emma. She has a sister, Clara who married Peter and has 3 children. After burying her mother, who died of cancer, Emma lives with her “grossmammi” in the old house of her parents. Both parents are now dead and they have to think of earning some money. So do Clara and Peter, because Peter lost his job and Clara worries a lot how to feed them all. Then Adam Otto, the son of the neighbours, returns from Michigan. Because he left the Amish community and started to live the American live, he was banned. He also was best friends with Emma, and she loves him still. Does he also love her? And will he fit in the Amish community again? Then a nephew of Peter arrives. He seems to like Emma, but is he really the good man he presumes to be? How it all ends, you have to read in the book for yourself, but it’s worth your time.In most Amish novels I read, the Christian faith and Amish way of life is a big part of the story. I find that interesting to read. I have enjoyed reading this novel: it was easy to read and the tale was very well. Although I must say: “all that goes well, ends well”, which applies to most novels I know. And would we like the novels so much if that was different? less
