review 1: 2013 IRA Finalist for Young Adult Fiction which has an inviting premise -- a young girl from Amherst, MA uses the poetry and life of Emily Dickinson to make sense of recent events in her life. The book may have benefited by greater focus as the character deals with a kitchen sink of issues (mother's death, friend's disappearance, a growing relationship with her student teacher)with avery heavy dark mood cast over the story. The dialogue was frustrating at times as characters spent more time telling each other to talk then it involved actual talking. There are lots of interesting themes and I admire the ambitious effort but in the end the writing might have been overly complex in trying to explain the complexity of life.
review 2: What's generally called "litera
... morery fiction" (a term I'm not crazy about) doesn't really have an equivalent in the YA world, but if it did, Emily's Dress and Other Missing Thing would fit snugly into that category. It's sort of mystery and it has a hint of romance, but it's really a portrait of grief and recovery. It's slowly-plotted, especially for a book with a potential murder and a grand theft, but it's gorgeously written and refreshingly opaque. Much of the time, readers are left to infer exactly what's happening or has happened, but the fractured narrative is a nice reflection of its narrator. One of the most unique things I've read in a while - recommend to fans of Imaginary Girls or The Sky is Everywhere. less
