review 1: I judge all historical fiction against Philippa Gregory. It is not that she is a fabulous writer, it is that her style of writing historical fiction just grabs me. The Henry VIII time period is also outrageously exciting. A real life and death soap opera that is so incredibly intriguing to me. I was very interested in this book but it fell short. I did find myself looking up quite a bit of the history, which is what I really love about historical fiction, but the characters were not very strong or believable. I was also thrown by the magic realism which I just did not expect. This was not a bad book and I am not sorry I read it but it is not one of my favorites.
review 2: Audio. 2012. Read by Julia Emelin. St Petersburg, Russia, 1917. Gregori Rasputi
... moren's body is pulled from the Neva River. His 18 year old daughter, Masha, is sent to live at the imperial palace with Tsar Nikolay and family, wife, Tsarina Alexandra, daughters, Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia and son, Aloysha. He suffers from hemophilia, a blood disease that keeps him bedridden; it is suspected, the hemophilia is in the blood line of his grandmother, Queen Victoria. Eventually, the Bolsheviks placed the royal family under house arrest. I was interested in the history side of it since I know little of the Russian history. less

A great work of historical fiction from a third party viewpoint. I enjoyed listening to this story.
