review 1: Normally, I hate it when reviewers say an author wrote from a member of the opposite sex's point-of-view successfully, but in the case of "Bright Before Us," I think it's absolutely appropriate praise. Arnold-Ratliff has written from the perspective of a male sociopath as only a woman familiar with the type can. Francis's behavior towards his wife is abomidable in the most believable ways, and is indicative of the cruelty all of us are capable of if we indulge and then become trapped in relationships that were only meant to be place-holders. "Bright Before Us" serves as a poignant reminder not of the fragility of relationships, but how addiction to security can isolate a person from the life-defining love we each crave.
review 2: Excellent debut novel. The cha
... moreracters are alive and real. We may not like them - we may even hate them - but we can feel them. The plot is powerful and moving. Just a really, really first offering from an author who would seem to have lots of potential. One thing though - Arnold-Ratliff uses italics rather than quotation marks. Now, it would seem the reason is to add to the novel's dream-like feel, but it still drove me nuts. But, that's just me. less
