review 1: This book follows the lives of two women who live together: Bella in her 20s, and her godmother Alice who's in her 60s. We are guided through their experiences in love, and are also given a feel for what it's like to work as an Estate Agent through Bella's character.A very ordinary book about ordinary people who do ordinary things. I felt like it was a romantic book that my grandma would possibly enjoy since she appreciates gentle and innocent romantic gestures, like telling you how youthful you look, opening a door for you, checking to see if you're warm enough, offering to make you a cup of tea, or giving you a compliment on your scarf or cardigan. The writing lacked a bit of sparkle and artistry for me. It doesn't give much intellectual-credit to the reader to fill in th... moree blanks or to work out what's going on, and tends to over-explain things. At times the over-explanation of body language and thoughts made me almost feel like I was reading a children's book. I also felt like there was a lot of "filler" that didn't add much to the story. All in all, did I enjoy this book? to quote a Alice, "Not awfully... it was rather dull."Rating breakdown:Story: 4/10Romance sizzle factor: 2/10Writing: 4/10Characters: 5/10Humour: 1/10- - -*ARC copy provided courtesy of NetGalley*
review 2: A light and frothy read on Good Friday, Katie Fforde humming along, but not quite as much zing as some of her earlier books. I felt Nevil was just too awful for Bella even to have imagined she was in love with him. Also the impression Fforde gave of 60 year olds (like Alice) being superannuated, "old" passionless beings was somewhat contrived. If only life was like a Katie Fforde book, rather like a Hollywood movie, but set in the Fens or the Cotswolds or some other "counties" part of England. Somehow, these books cry out to be read though! less
