review 1: Well-written and exquisitely edited. A very personal, vulnerable account of a year in the life of three generations: author, her teenage daughter, and her aging mom move in together and through proximity and conflict discover much about their relationship past and present. For me, it was a page-turner, and I appreciated the author's honesty in sharing her family's story. Didn't become maudlin or pedantic while providing insight into the pain and impact of addiction and the author's journey to acceptance of her mother. Recommend.
review 2: Biography of Katie Hafner who tried for years to come to terms with her mother. Katie's mom had lots of problems and was an alcoholic who gave her 2 daughters away to her ex husband and even then they were not in a good situat
... moreion. Now as an adult Katie tried having her mother come and live with her and her daughter but that was a disaster. Then when the get their own places and have space they begin to come to understand each other and their situations and finally are able to appreciate each other. It made me glad that I had the mother I did and though the relationship had it's ups and downs it was so good compared to the true disasters others have to endure. Thanks Mom, I love you!! less

Interesting memoir. A little infuriating at times. Found myself yelling at the characters a lot.
