review 1: The authors are correspondents for BBC and NBC. The premise of the book is to delve into confidence, particularly focusing on women's experience with it. They explored these and many other questions: Is it hardwired or learned? Is is different for men and women? Can you teach yourself to be more confident? They spend a lot of time with researchers and experts who study confidence. A few of my takeaways, kind of random but they stuck with me:Girls naturally excel in the arena of school - it fits how they're wired and socialized. But, when they get to the workplace as adults they find it functions differently (more of a male model) so they are often at a disadvantage. Many of the experts in the book believe that it's important for girls to play sports. It teaches them compet... moreition, how to lose/fail (something that girls tend to shy away from), helps them develop thicker skin. The authors encouraged women to stop the common inflection at the end of sentences where it sounds like they are asking a question instead of stating something. It makes them sound less confident and strong. I agree with this and have tried to rid myself of this tick in my own conversation. There were lots of other good tidbits in the book and a section about how to try to instill more confidence in young girls/daughters that I thought had some great guidance. I would love to see more women in powerful positions and if the techniques in this book can help women get there then I'm all for them!
review 2: Can be a bit academic at times but heard Katty Kay speak about the book first and she was delightful. Delightfully British too, and self-deprecating BUT her story about obsessing for 3 weeks over one question........ ahhhh! Learn from her hubby, who brooded all of an hour or 2 over his big blunder. Shows that we blow up our failings way more than we should Her phrase "Confidence trumps Competence!" really hit home for me. So acting more confident will get you further THAN knowing more!?!As women, we need to take the 'I think' and 'can I?' and all sorts of questions out of our vocabulary and be more assertive. Part of success is asking for what you want, so don't be shy, step up and make a difference. We all make mistakes, don't brood over them. Learn and move on. Great book -- should be compulsory reading at all biz schools!! less
