review 1: This book is a delight! It would make a great choice for elementary aged readers to introduce early manuscript production techniques and medieval history and art-- there's plenty of educational material tucked neatly inside a humorous storyline, both in the text and the illustrations. And speaking of the illustrations, they are exquisite... I love the illuminated letters and the depiction of the change of seasons to mark the passage of time. Love it!
review 2: Not really sure would the audience for this book would be. I knew that ye olde language and manuscript-type illustrations might not immediately engage my 7 year old (who has been read a wide variety of picture books and non-fic) but I thought the odd situation of a book-eating bear would win her over. Bu... moret at the end she declared "That was kind of boring". As an adult, I enjoyed the book's period details and extra information. less
